So many options....so little time.

As an Advertising Creative/Graphic Designer, who is in his senior year at college, I find myself having to make the decision to become a freelancer or work for an actual agency. Also, if I choose to become a freelance graphic designer, should I specialize in a specific niche of graphic design (logo design, print, web design) or should I provide services for all three? With this economy, it seems that obtaining a Jr. Art Director position would be difficult. A freelancer, however is a guaranteed position, as it is basically like being an entrepreneur. However, as a freelancer, there is not as much income stability unless I can establish faithful clientele. Decisions...decisions. I guess I am getting ahead of myself, though, because I have yet to complete and internship....SOMEBODY HIRE ME!!!

Overseas Advertising

Overseas advertising is crazy (as in amazing, not insane). They have so much creative freedom. Check out these posters I just came across for a French AIDS campaign.

I would love to advertising overseas, someday. It seems like it is a lot of fun coming up with outrageous ideas.

Aging Print/Magazine Readers

A recent article in Ad Age spoke on the increasing age in readership of certain popular magazines. This comes as somewhat of a disappointment to publishers as they much rather appeal to younger, rather than older, audiences.

In the article, they highlighted some points that I am in complete agreement with. For instance, that fact that publishers and advertisers rather have younger readers/consumers reading their publications, instead of the older, financially stable crowd, because they feel that younger generations will spend more money over a longer period of time. This makes perfect sense because the younger generation will out live the older generation and eventially become the financially stable consumers. Another good point was that some publications welcomed older readers because they know that these are the consumers with money to buy the products that they advertise. A prime example of such a publication is Motor Boating magazine. Most young people can't afford boats and what not!!

I agree with both points presented in the article, but I have my own opinion to venture. As a young person, I know for a fact that we are relatively fickle individuals. We like to follow the new trends, technologies, and other means of expression and obtaining information. We like to try new avenues for obtaining things of interest, especially the electronic avenue. However, we do stay true to our favorite mags. I noticed that the article did not mention any of the magazines that relate to younger people, like Complex, Cosmo, or GQ, etc. They should look into those types of magazines to examine readership ages. Well, I've talked enough. Until next post. Dueces.
